Volume Boosters for Fine Hair

4 Dec 2014

I'll just put it straight out there. I hate having fine hair. I look at my friends, at other bloggers, celebrities, all with big, voluminous and goddess-like hair. Then there's me, the limp and lifeless one who has to spend hours to get half an hour of root lift, just wishing I could have Disney hair too.

A review of the best thickening hairsprays for more voluminous hair

There are a few star products I turn to which can help me create volume whilst giving me some root lift that my hair naturally lacks, and teamed with my Babyliss Big Hair (£40) manages to keep a style in place for most of the day. Each of these products is suitable for use before drying and styling hair (although some can be used after, too) and I spritz throughout damp hair in sections towards the root, before using my Big Hair to create effortless root lift and volume that's quick and easy.

VO5 Plump it Up Amplifying Blow Dry Lotion (£4.40) has been one of my top hair care products for a couple of years now, managing to compete with my favourite high-end offerings. It is one of the best budget-friendly products I've come across that does everything it claims without breaking the bank. Even better? Products like this last forever! This one is a bit of a multi-tasker; it helps provide volume whilst working to detangle, smooth frizz and flyaway hairs whilst also protecting from heat damage.

John Frieda Luxurious Volume Blow Dry Lotion (£6.99) is another great budget option and also very similar to the VO5 Blow Dry Lotion. The only difference I can see is that John Frieda doesn't hold a really big style as well as VO5, but it does keep simplier styles in place for most of the day. With a formula that promises to create thicker, fuller looking hair, it has a unique heat shield technology and uses the latest thickening technology to give your fine hair some oomph.

Aveda Volumizing Tonic (£18) is the newest root-boosting product to impress me, which overall gives my hair the most healthy and naturally-voluminous look. It doesn't just provide root-lift and volume but gives my hair a natural, healthy-looking shine. Even better? It's enhanced with a Pure-Fume Aroma, containing essential oils which give this tonic a lovely, uplifting scent.

Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray (from £8) has been my favourite go-to product for volume for quite a while now and it's still the one I always reach for first. It delivers every time, giving my hair more body and shape, and one of the few I use on dry hair as well as damp hair. It creates huge, huge volume at the roots in just a couple of spritz and has an incredible hold. If you want the best of the best for fine hair? This is it.

  1. Great products! My hair is naturally big but I always go for volume shampoo and conditioner!

  2. I don't really have a problem with having no volume but I do like to sometimes add a bit of product to get my hair massive if I'm going on a night out or something. I've not used all of these but I have used the Bumble & Bumble one which gave me amazing volume but sadly it also gave me a bad reaction and left my scalp really dry and sore :( xx

  3. Aveda tonic sounds good. Does it make hair greasy?

  4. I like the sound of Aveda Tonic, adding it to my wishlist x

  5. The Bumble and Bumble range runs quite expensive over here in Ireland :( and I would love to try so much from it x

  6. I LOVE my B&B Thickening Spray. I can see a noticeable difference when I use it! It's expensive but lasts ages and is really worth the price :)

    Kat x

  7. I've got completely straight hair and would totally recommend TIGI Bed Head Superstar Blowdry Lotion for getting some volume and thickness. It's a bit sticky and messy to start with but I've had great lasting results from it on my coloured hair.

  8. I'm a big fan of the VO5 blow dry lotion and as you say such an afforable price.

    Victoria x

  9. I think I'l definitely be trying the VO5 and Bumble and Bumble after reading this! Fine hair is the bane of my life!
