Bill's Restaurant Highcross Leicester Review

Last weekend I shared our recent family day out at Highcross Leicester, where we had a lovely day exploring the shops, checking out the brand new Toys R Us store and visiting Bill's Restaurant. I wanted to share a full review of our visit to Bill's with you, as we were just so impressed with the full experience from the food to the venue and the wonderful team there. If you're local to Leicester or visiting soon, you must make a visit to Bill's - you won't be disappointed!

If you've been to Highcross before, you'll know that they have a huge outdoor dining court with a lovely array of well-known franchises that offer a great variety of cuisines. Whatever your taste preference, there's a venue for you and it's quite a fun vibrant part of Highcross itself, which I always enjoy visiting. I'd visited Bill's once before, back in 2015 when I was invited along by Highcross to experience the summer dining (you can check out the full feature here in my The Sunday Post #42 | Summer Dine Leicester Highcross post) on offer and adored the unique flavours and food on offer at Bill's, so I was really excited to head there again.

We were seated super quickly when we arrived and offered a table which had space to have Willow's stroller at the table with us. I loved this as I always feel a bit wary of leaving our pushchair near the entrance of venues, especially if it's full of shopping! I felt reassured having the stroller at the table with us, tucked to one side so it wasn't in the way but easy for us to grab anything we needed from it for Willow. Willow was quickly seated in a freshly cleaned highchair, another plus for me as so many venues leave their highchairs in really awful states.

The team at Bill's are very cheerful, a definite happy-go-lucky vibe with lots of smiles and they actually make conversation, which is fab. Willow was given as much attention as my partner and I and we were made to feel really welcome. We were given food and drinks menus and given enough time to browse the wide range on offer before making our order.

The kid's menu was impressive, offering properly cooked meals for little ones without being stuck with the usual fries and chicken nuggets option that you find in most venues. For starter, all little ones are offered carrot and cucumber sticks with hummus, with Willow tucked straight into. This is the standard starter for all kids visiting Bill's, which I prefer to a selection of starters to pick from because three full courses would be quite a lot for a little one to manage!

For my starter, I opted for the Dakkochi Chicken Skewers with a spicy Korean barbeque glaze, spring onions and lime. I've recently started trying a few different Korean foods, finding more and more places stocking Korean options and I found the flavour of the Dakkochi Chicken Skewers a lovely twist on the more traditional barbeque flavour you'd expect; it had a lovely depth to it, the spice was just right and the lime added a lovely refreshing touch. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the portion itself was incredibly generous for a starter.

My partner, M, opted for the Mini Cumberland Sausages glazed with honey and grain mustard. Sausages are M's favourite kind of food and so this was the perfect starter for him. With my starter being so generous in size, I swapped a skewer with him for a sausage and have to say, the glaze and grain mustard were a perfect flavour pairing. I would definitely try this one myself as a starter next time we visit!

We also had a portion of Giant Green Gordal Olives; this was the only aspect of the meal I didn't enjoy, which surprised me as I adore olives! I just found they tasted a little unusual to your standard olive.

Selecting our mains was a difficult choice as everything on the menu sounded amazing! For Willow, we chose the Cumberland Sausages with creamy mashed potatoes, carrots and gravy. Honestly, I was so happy that Willow was able to have a proper hearty meal for her dinner and of course, had to try it for myself. The mashed potatoes were absolutely perfect; creamy and smooth but just the right consistency that they didn't disappear in the gravy. The carrots were perfectly cooked for her, not too hard that she struggled to chomp on them but not too soft either. The gravy was ideal and tasted way better than the gravy I make at home! She made a good effort with her meal and loved the Cumberland sausages, in fact, I'd go so far as to say this was her favourite meal out!

For my main, I originally opted for the Chicken Milanese, but they had sold out of this popular dish and so I had to pick another, which thankfully worked in my favour because the dish I went for blew me away! The Thai Green Chicken Curry; fragrant coconut curry with sugar snap peas, courgettes, lemongrass, ginger and coconut rice was by far the most delicious Thai green curry I have ever had. It was bursting with vibrant flavour and each mouthful was an absolute delight. The rice had just the tiniest hint of coconut and the chilli kick in the curry teamed with the fragrant and refreshing lemongrass made it a scrumptious meal to tuck into, I'm really glad I ended up with this dish as my main.

M decided to go for the Fish Finger Sandwich with Tartare sauce, rocket, ketchup, on a toasted bloomer with fries. I didn't try this one myself, but he said he really enjoyed it and referred to it as a 'posh fish finger sarnie', as the fish fingers were extremely high quality and all the flavours worked well together.

Mains done and dusted, it was time for dessert. Willow had a Strawberry Icecream with Bill's wafer, which she loved! We don't usually have dessert at home and if we do, it's fruit, so this was a real treat for her and she devoured every last drop! I really liked how her wafer had Bill's logo on it and it was great for her to dip it into her ice cream. The size of her dessert was actually spot on too, as I find some desserts for children can be far too much, so one simple scoop was more than enough for our little girl.

M went for the Warm Chocolate Brown with warm chocolate sauce, vanilla ice cream and a chocolate flake, which looked absolutely delicious! M is a big fan of chocolate desserts so this was perfect for him and a very decent size too.

My dessert? Oh, I've been dreaming of my dessert ever since our visit and I am determined to get back to Bill's asap just to indulge in it again! The most amazing Lemon Meringue Pie Cheesecake with Bill's lemon curd, frozen yoghurt and a poppy seed meringue, I've never had anything like it before and I would go so far as to see it was the best dessert I have ever had! Honestly, if I could eat this dessert all day every day until I turned into a lemon meringue pie cheesecake, I would!

Our trip to Bill's was delicious, full of incredible flavour, unique dishes, gorgeous presentation and left us perfectly satisfied after a long day of shopping. Add to that the wonderful team who made our visit such a pleasure, and the quirky setting of Bill's, it was the best destination for our little family to enjoy a meal together.

If you're local to Leicester or heading there soon, I cannot recommend Bill's enough. I think I might be a little addicted....
