Boneyard Leicester Review

Leicester is becoming a real favourite of mine when it comes to delicious food that leaves the proper foodie in me satisfied. At the end of 2016 I popped along to the press night of a brand new venue which has opened up on Granby Street, just a short walk from the City Centre shopping centres and one that will definitely please the meat eaters of Leicester with it's original menu, punchy flavours and gluttonous dishes you'll find hard to resist. Welcome to Leicester, Boneyard.

A venue that stands out before you even step a foot inside, with a colourful and dark take on neon signs standing proud above the door, a dark bold design and huge windows filling the front wall, giving you a glimpse into the restaurant inside. The atmosphere inside is relaxed; dark little corners filled with hushed conversations over inventive cocktails as diners browse menus. From the name alone you can guess that the menu is filled with meaty dishes, a modest selection on offer giving you a decent choice from some star dishes covering a variety of meats and flavours.

The drinks menu is vast, with more cocktails than you could hope to get through and some really imaginative names to match. There's everything from prosecco with a twist to really punchy cocktails that'll have you grinning in no time. I'm a big cocktail fan and love something fresh and fruity, nothing too sweet, something that gives me that slightly fuzzy head feeling without the added hangover. The selection on offer is perfect and I particularly enjoyed Stained Lemonade; gin with elderflower cordial, homemade lemonade, garnished with a lemon slice.

Enough about liquor, the food is the real star of this venue, with the spotlight being shone on Boneyard's sticky wings which pack a punch flavour wise. Cumin, salt and pepper and a choice two sauces, Spike or Slaughter. I opted for Spike on the night, with the Slaughter sauce on the side for me to try out. I am a huge fan of hot and spicy food, to the point where I'll be the one popping hot sauce on my roast dinners on a Sunday whilst everyone else opts for gravy. I love heat when it comes to meat and anything that sets my mouth on fire is a sure winner!

The Spike sauce has it's own power, but the Slaughter sauce? It's a pleasant shock to the tastebuds as it heats up and intensifies, maybe not one I could handle over all of my food, but definitely a must for anyone who likes a hotter sauce on the side. The wings themselves are soft, tender pieces of chicken, perfectly marinaded for real flavour throughout served with fresh herbs and onions. I could have eaten an endless amount of these and found the starter portion size of three wings to be more than enough to get me going on my evening of food discovery.

I took the longest time deciding on my main, wanting to try every single dish on offer because they all sounded so incredibly delicious! I ended up opting for Lamb Snatch; slow cooked pulled lamb shoulder with Spike sauce. Like all Snatch options on the menu, it comes presented in a freshly baked flatbread with slaw, pickles, hummus and coriander. It's filling, it's messy and it tastes incredible. Honestly, I think the lamb is the best lamb I have ever had - and I'm a keen cook who loves cooking leg of lamb on a Sunday! Tender pieces of lamb which melt in the mouth with the odd crispy bit which added an almost charcoal barbeque taste to the mix. Chips on the side make this a super filling meal and one which will definitely leave you feeling very satisfied indeed.

Of course, if you are a real gluten like me then you won't be able to resist browsing the dessert menu. A modest choice, and taking into account how full I already was after too delectably meaty courses, I opted for vanilla and salted caramel ice cream. As far as ice cream goes, it was extremely flavourful, just the right portion size and a great way to cool down after a hot and spicy meal slathered in Spike and Slaughter sauce.

It's safe to say Boneyard is the hottest new venue to satisfy your taste buds in Leicester. Will I be returning? Hell yes! The menu may not be family-friendly (I think the marinades may set my poor girl on fire!), it's the perfect spot for a date night or funky little venue to visit with friends. Worth a visit? Definitely, one to add to your to-try list!
