A big foodie, I love finding hidden gems, even more so when they are local and budget-friendly. Plan Burrito, situated on Ashby Road, Loughborough, is a small but fun venue that is passionate about providing authentic Tex-Mex food with a simple menu and tons of flavour. Given the opportunity to visit Plan Burrito for myself this week, I popped along to see what the menu had to offer.
The venue itself is just a short walk from the town centre and easy to spot with it's eye-catching Sombrero outside making it easier to spot. Not as small as it looks from the outside, Plan Burrito has a spacious front section where you can make your order, take a seat while you wait or to eat your Tex-Mex dish, or even take part in knitting the Plan Burrito scarf. Further back there's a seated dining area complete with a projector for videos and movies, the kind of venue that makes you want to hang out there all day!
The menu is super simple, consisting of burritos and tacos with 3 meat varieties, nachos and warm churros for your sweet. I love simple menus like this because it saves time when trying to decide what to go for, instead of trying to wade through hundreds of options - all you need to decide is what filling to go for and how sweet you like your sweet, perfect!
If you're opting for a burrito or tacos, you have a choice of tender chicken packed with flavour, carnitas, which is specially seasoned shredded pork, barbacoa, which is finely pulled beef seasoned with a secret recipe, or a vegetarian option seasoned with peppers, onions and mushrooms. Once you've selected your meat you have a huge variety of fillings which includes yellow or white mexican rice, black turtle beans or refried beans, vegetables, Monterey Jack grated cheese, salsa, jalapenos, sour cream, guacamole and shredded lettuce.
I opted for chicken, with every filling going. Far from being taste-overload, it was absolutely delicious. The meat was perfectly tender with lots of flavour coming from the rice and the sour cream and guacamole were the perfect finishing touches, levelling out the spice. Extremely filling too, but with the option to wrap up any I couldn't manage to have at home later - a massive plus! Takeaway options are available for all items on the menu, so it was nice to see this being extended to eat-in customers too.
A side of nachos were a scrumptious accompaniment; tortilla chips smothered in delicious chilli and Monterey cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa and jalapenos, with the option to top with the meat of your choice - we went for carnitas. Nachos are one of my favourite guilty pleasures, but these by far surpassed any I've had before, mostly down to the Monterey cheese and incredible shredded pork which was incredibly flavourful and melt-in-the-mouth good. Add an pineapple Jarritos, a popular Mexican soft drink, and you're good to go with a flavourful, authentic meal.
If you're a fan of sweet desserts then the warm churros are an absolute must. Traditional Mexican doughnuts served with a choice of warm chocolate or caramel sauce, these are a scrumptious treat and great for sharing too. Perfectly soft on the inside whilst deliciously crunchy on the outside, the chocolate sauce is my favourite for dipping, whilst the caramel had my sweet tooth well and truly satisfied.
The entire menu is great value for money; the huge and super filling burritos and tacos range from £5 - £5.50 depending on filling, your nachos are between £4 - £5.50 depending on your toppings and your churros are just £4.
No doubt a great hit with students but easily a destination that's great for locals, families and shopping dates with friends; Plan Burrito is a quick and easy venue that's a must-visit for authentic Tex-Mex food. One to add to the to-try list for anyone local to Loughborough!
