Treating Your Baby's Dry Skin

Mustela Cleansing Milk, Weleda White Mallow Face Cream and Mustela Cold Cream Nutri-Protective Review

Although she is only 15 weeks old, Willow has her very own little skincare routine that we follow morning and evening. It may sound excessive for a baby, but the routine we have and the products we rely on, have been specifically chosen to help ease, protect and nourish her skin. You see, from a very early age of just a few weeks old, Willow has had tremendously dry skin; predominately on her cheeks and forehead, which has been confirmed to us as mild eczema. I suspected it would be eczema as it is something I had myself as a child, which still occasionally flares up, and it's also extremely common for babies to have eczema.

When we did have the eczema confirmed, the Health Visitor and GP were super impressed with how I had been managing her eczema with the products I'll be featuring in this post, and told me there was no need to use anything else and only to take her back to the GP if it got worse. The products we use keep her eczema at bay wonderfully, so much so you wouldn't know she even had it! It's by using these products morning and evening that we are able to keep her skin happy, in turn making her more comfortable and happy, and for us this little routine works absolute wonders.

Before I go on I do want to make it clear that every baby is individual and with such delicate skin, it is always important to get a professional opinion. Your baby's skin health is not something worth risking or messing around with, and you have to patch test products before just slathering them everywhere. If you think your baby needs something with a bit more oomph than what you're using to help protect their skin, check with your GP and see what they recommend. What works for us may not work for others and your should always seek a professional opinion.

Mustela Cleansing Milk (200ml £6.50, 500ml £8.95)
We've big fans of Mustela in the Tattooed Tealady house and I have found the Cleansing Milk to be invaluable in Willow's skincare routine. For the most part we had just been 'cleansing' Willow's face with water, but I found it really wasn't working for us and if anything, it was making her dry skin much worse, even with the use of facial creams. Since introducing a cleanser into her routine the difference has been astonishing.

With a 98% natural formula and full of skin-loving ingredients such as Sunflower Seed Oil, Avocado, Coconut Oil and Sweet Almond Oil to name just a few, it's suitable for daily use and from birth onwards; even gentle enough for babies which have been in Neonatal Intensive Care Units. We pop around a 20p sized amount onto a cotton pad and gently apply to Willow's skin, before following up with a second moist cotton pad to remove. Her skin is gently cleansed, whilst hydrating, nourishing and soothing, treating and nurturing her skin. Not only does this help to cleanse and hydrate Willow's skin, but with continued use it helps to strengthen her skin barrier and promote healthy cell strength. I'll be investing in the 500ml bottle once we have finished this one, couldn't be without this beauty!

We've used this with Willow since she was born and our tube is almost empty, but it's one I will be repurchasing because we're big fans. Another Mustela product, this one has a thicker consistency than other baby facial creams we've tried and I like to use it on days where we will be out and about, to give her extra protection from harsh winds.

Another one suitable for use from birth, it works to nourish skin that is naturally dry and stressed. The formula, which is 94% natural and includes skin-soothing ingredients, helps to reinforce the hydrolipidic film of your babies skin, protecting against external aggressors and helping to deeply nourish and hydrate. Willow's skin always feels extremely soft and plump after we use our Cold Cream, and I find it's also the facial cream which seems to last the longest, keeping her skin protected for longer.

I have been a big fan of Weleda for over 5 years now and I have fallen in love with their baby care range. We use a huge array of their products from nappy creams to bath time favourites and most recently, the White Mallow Face Cream. We use this one daily, morning and evening, part of the Baby Derma range.

All White Mallow products have been created alongside midwives to create a range of products which would gently treat hypersensitive, dry and atopic baby skin. The face cream features calming Organic Mallow alongside gentle Pansy extract and nourishing organic oils such as Coconut Oil and Sweet Almond Oil, whilst organic golden Beeswax works to create a resistant protective layer on skin. It works really well to help soothe her skin and protect it, whilst also keeping her skin soft and moisturised.

For us, these three products work miracles. They have soothed Willow's skin, they keep the severe dryness she was experiencing at bay, they stop her skin feeling itchy so she no longer feels the need to rub and scratch. Instead of her cheeks being incredibly rough to the touch, they are deliciously soft and plump, just as a babies skin should be.

I cannot recommend Mustela and Weleda enough when it comes to baby skincare and body care products, their products are natural and absolutely wonderful!
