The January Subscription Boxes 2016

A January 2016 Birchbox UK review

A new year, a fresh start, that's the theme of January, right? When it comes to subscription boxes the first box of a new year is hugely important. Not only does it have to follow on from a great box from December, seeing out the previous year whilst managing to get the right theme to celebrate Christmas and New Year's, the January box has to impress subscribers new and old, starting the brand new year with a bang! The December subscription boxes were pretty impressive, so I couldn't wait to see what my favourite brands had in store this month. Luckily, I've been left very impressed; here's hoping it's a sign of great boxes to follow in 2016!

Birchbox UK | A monthly beauty subscription service that often includes lifestyle extras, featuring 5 luxury beauty treats from high-end brands covering makeup, body care, hair care and skincare. Subscribers can review products found inside their boxes on the Birchbox website in return for 'Birchbox credits', which can be used in the Birchbox e-shop. You can also purchase the products and brands featured in each month's box in the Birchbox e-shop. Birchbox costs £10 a month plus £2.95 post and packaging. Available at www.birchbox.co.uk

For the January box Birchbox have teamed up with Pinterest, a very unique collaboration and one which definitely caught my attention when the box arrived. With a New Year theme and aspirations to help subscribers achieve the best 2016 possible, Birchbox and Pinterest are offering tutorials, recipes and inspiration for the year ahead with the January box, a box which features 7 products. As usual the box features a little booklet with all the extra info you need for this month's box, including the collaborative features with Pinterest, as well as information on this month's products, what to expect from Birchbox in 2016 including sneak peek's and competitions as well as how you can earn Birchbox points to spend in the Birchbox e-shop by referring a friend. There's also some lovely illustrated inspiring postcards with positive mantras for the year ahead, which I plan on adding to my Life Planner as motivational reminders throughout the year.

Onto the products and I am really happy with the selection this month. The first product I noticed was a 30ml sample of the Caudalie Fleur de Vigne Shower Gel (full size £9) which has a very lovely uplifting scent of White Rose, Rose Pepper and Grape Blossom. I adore Caudalie so I'm really excited to give this product a try, especially as I love fresh and soothing scents like this at the start of a new year to help refresh and revive mind and body; it's enriched with Aloe Vera too, so should be lovely for cleansing skin! A product which has featured in a recent Birchbox (so I was a little surprised to see it featured again so soon) is a full size Eyeko Fat Liquid Eyeliner in Black (£12), which although it is a repeat product is actually a good one to have as I mostly use black liquid liners, and this one happens to be a bit blooming good! Another makeup item in the box is a sample of the new Benefit They're Real! Tinted Primer (full size £18.50), which I am excited to try as it's been on my radar since it's release, but at the same time it'd be nice to see more variety in the brands Birchbox collaborate with; Benefit are in practically every box and it's getting a little old now, sorry Birchbox!

A skincare product I am very excited to try is a 30ml sample of the Absolution L'Eau Soir et Matin (full size £27) which is a purifying cleansing water packed with nutrients such as Hazelnut Oil and Aloe Vera. I'm running low on makeup remover, so I'm looking forward to giving this a try! Covering hair care there's 2 products inside the January box, both from the same brand. There's a 30ml sample of the Parlor Moisturizing & Repairing Shampoo alongside a 12ml sample of the matching Parlor Moisturizing & Repairing Conditioner. Each costs £16 in full size and claims to have a light-weight formula which cleanses and conditions hair whilst strengthening, with the signature Parlor scent of ripe Peach and freshly cut grass. Sounds lovely! Last but not least and the final product inside the January box is the Beauty Bonus in the form of a Birchbox Compact Mirror (£4), perfect for popping in your handbag for on-the-go touch ups.

A lovely box from Birchbox to kick off 2016. It's a shame only one of the products is full size, 2 if you could the Beauty Bonus, but the variety of products and brands is great. Is it enough to get you subscribing in time for the February box?

A January 2016 The Melt Crowd Box review

The Melt Crowd | A monthly subscription box containing 8 Scent Melts from Flamingo Candles, including exclusive monthly scents and a free wax burner with your 1st box. The Melt Crowd costs £10 a month including delivery, with a contents worth £18.95. Each month includes an exclusive 20% off discount code to use on the Flamingo Candles website. Available at www.flamingocandles.co.uk.

Last month when I shared my thoughts on the December boxes I mentioned that I hoped The Melt Crowd would come out with a selection of scents for January which were refreshing, invigorating and not only am I happy to say that the scents in this month's box tick the boxes, but it's possibly my favourite box yet!

This month features 2 B.A.R.E Essential Oils Scent Melts, which will soon be joining the Flamingo Candles range, so the January The Melt Crowd has managed to snap an exclusive look at some of the scents the range will feature. There's Orange & Lemongrass Essential Oils as well as Cinnamon & Mandarin Essential Oils, Both smell lovely but the Orange & Lemongrass is definitely more the kind of scent I'm opting for right now, with the Cinnamon & Mandarin one coming across very spicy.

Of the usual Scent Melt range there's 6 really delicious scents featured in the January box; Coconut, Crystal Mountain Water, Strawberry Jam, Pink Denium, Baby Powder and Whiskey. Honestly, what a lovely selection of scents! Baby Powder is very apt, Crystal Mountain Water is incredibly refreshing and Strawberry Jam is so delicious it smells good enough to eat! The Coconut one is another one that'll soon leave you feeling peckish, Whiskey is one of my favourite scents from Flamingo Candles yet and Pink Denim, for those interested, has a lovely soft floral scent.

I am really, really happy with the selection of scents in this box and think it's going to be hard to beat next month! Do any of the January scents tempt you into subscribing?

A January 2016 The Vegan Kind Box review

The Vegan Kind | A monthly lifestyle subscription box including food, drinks and home products which are all 100% suitable for vegans. Each month The Vegan Kind donate 20p from the cost of each box to an animal charity chosen by subscribers, with each box including a generous array of products as well as a tasty recipe card. The Vegan Kind costs £10 a month plus £3.15 post and packaging. Available at www.thevegankind.co.uk.

The box we look forward to the most each month as a family, it'll come as no surprise that The Vegan Kind have yet again massively impressed me with the products and brands featured inside the January box. There's a whole host of delicious treats as well as a beauty product from a brand I'm always happy to try more from and even an old favourite of mine from a previous box!

Starting with the sweet treats we have a product which has featured before that was so delicious that I have to admit, I let out a little squeal of excitement when I saw it inside the January box. The Vego Chocolate Bar (65g, £2) is one of the most delicious chocolate bars you will ever indulge in, and that's no understatement! The January box features a mini bar, so not quite the great big hulk of a bar I've had in a previous The Vegan Kind box, but you can bet I'm saving this one for a treat. A new brand to me comes in the shape of the beautifully packaged Squirrel Sisters Delicious Snack Bars Cacao Brownie (40g, £2.49) which definitely appeals to my sweet tooth! Each pack includes 2 20g portions of brownie, a delicious treat to indulge in with a cuppa at the end of the day. Another sweet treat is a 20g packet of Snact Apple & Raspberry Fruit Jerky (£1) which was so scrumptious! A chewy dried fruit snack that was really flavourful, Snact is made using 100% fruit and all natural flavours. Would definitely like to add some of these as a regular into our snack cupboard.

Onto a savoury treat and there's a big 60g packet of Soffle's Rosemary & Thyme Pitta Chips (£1.20) which is another one I've popped in the cupboard for a treat when I want something really flavourful, as we've had Soffle's in The Vegan Kind boxes before and know how delicious and packed with flavour they are! There's also a drink inside the January box which is something I haven't tried before and that's a 200ml carton of Provamel Organic Rice Milk Coconut Drink (80p). I don't think I've ever tried rice milk before, but I have tried coconut milk before and found myself a bit 50/50 on the taste. I've popped this in the fridge and will use it as a hydrating boost when feeding baby, hopefully I like it!

The beauty product inside this month's box is a full size Dr. Organic Organic Olive Oil Hand & Nail Cream (125ml, £6.49) which has come at a perfect time. As I'm sure you're aware, it's even more important to wash hands as often as possible when around newborns and babies in general, which can have the effect of drying out hands and causing some skin concerns, so I have been making sure that by every sink is a tube of hand cream as well as in my changing bags, bedside table and changing/breastfeeding boxes around the house. This will definitely be a handy addition! A surprising addition to the January box but one which has popped straight into our kitchen for me to delve into when I want to try some new recipes is the Teen VGN Recipe Book (£1.50) which has been created by a non-profit organisation which provides online support for teen vegans. The recipe book itself is a collection of over 20 recipes which are all vegan friendly. Perfect timing as I want to get experimenting more in the kitchen whilst on maternity leave! Last but not least the January box includes a Veganuary Wristband (£2.99) which is a great way to show your support for Veganuary, made with 100% recycled silicone!

A fantastic start to 2016 for The Vegan Kind, I love the selection of sweet, savoury and beauty treats inside this month's box and I am already excited to see what the February box includes. Will you be giving The Vegan Kind a try in 2016?
