January Favourites 2016

I always think the first favourites of a new year says a lot about someone and how they feel about the fresh start that's presented to them when January 1st rolls around.

For me, January 1st and a New Year is all about embracing the year ahead with a fresh, revived and positive mind, and I think that shows in the products I reach for in all aspects of beauty. Lighter shades, fresher scents, invigorating ingredients, products and brands which give me a gentle and soothing push into the next 12 months.

For makeup there's a couple of products which have stood out for me this month, a month where an overdue baby and sleepless nights have meant little energy to do a full face of makeup, but desperately needing something to cover those tired eyes and a lack-lustre complexion.

The Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Corrector & Concealer* (£28) have been an amazing way to colour correct and conceal my under eyes over recent weeks. Each has a delicious formula and like the matching foundation which I mentioned in my makeup favourites of 2015, it works wonderfully with my dehydrated skin during these cold winter days. I'll be sharing a full review of all 3 very soon, so keep those eyes peeled. Sorting out the rest of my face is the beautiful Origins Plantscription Anti-aging Foundation (£30) which is a really lovely base for light-medium coverage that feels weightless on the skin but effortlessly leaves your complexion looking wonderful.

For cheeks it's been a light swish of Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Blush (£19) in Video, which I shared back in September as the perfect neutral blush. It adds just the most lovely subtle flush of colour whilst still being appropriate for any makeup look day or night, without being too vivid or bold. Unlike my lipstick picks this month, where I've been opting for bold, bright and vivid shades with MAC Ruby Woo Lipstick (£15.50) coming up top as my most reached for lipstick of the month, especially when teamed with the OCC Cosmetic Colour Pencil (£12.50) in the vivid red shade NSFW. The OCC lip pencil range is seriously underrated and for me easily comparable to all the best high-end brands when it comes to long-lasting and highly pigmented lip pencils.

A product which has snuck up on me this month, and one which I actually started to really like during December, is the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (£23.75). I've tried this in travel size before and I really wasn't a fan, but for some reason this full size has left me completely smitten! Perhaps the travel size has a slightly different formula? Either way, I love the way this effortlessly lengthens my lashes whilst giving them a thicker look, holding a curl well throughout the day (when applied directly after using my Kevyn Aucoin eyelash curlers).

Skincare and body care has been dominated by a need to feel fresh with skin that's soft and plump. I have been absolutely obsessed with the White Rabbit Skincare Rose & Frankincense Day Cream (£10), which I shared a review of last year alongside some other vegan friendly White Rabbit Skincare products. It's just the most beautiful moisturiser which leaves my skin feeling velvety soft, plumper to the touch and insanely hydrated. Honestly, I cannot rave about this beauty enough!

Body care wise I've really been using the Rituals T'ai Chi Foaming Shower Gel (£8.50) which came in the December Birchbox. It has a very subtle fragrance of White Lotus alongside the nourishing benefit of Yi Yi Ren, which is an ingredient traditionally used in Chinese medicine. This is the second Rituals Foaming Shower Gel I've tried and I'm quickly becoming a big fan of the range.

I've been going quite neutral with my nails, with a pop of colour as an accent nail. There's a few pale nudes I've been loving, such as Kure Bazaar Nail Polish (£15) in a cool toned nude, Corso 22, as well as the lovely Mavala Ivory Biege Nail Color Cream, which unfortunately looks like it is no longer available. For my accent nail with nude shades I've been obsessed with a beautiful winter perfect berry red, Max Factor Gel Shine Lacquer (£7.99) in Sheen Merlot.

I'd love to hear what products stood out for you the most this January, and what products you feel like you gravitate towards at the beginning of a new year. If you have any product recommendations or brands you think I should check out, let me know, as late night baby feeds mean lots of online window shopping!

  1. Again congrats on the birth of your beautiful daughter! My favorite January products were OCC cosmetics lip tar in black dahlia, applied as a stain, anything blush and highlight (though I mostly used my Bobbi Brown shimmer brick in Beige and makeup geek blushes) and the Stila eyes are the window in Soul palette because it's perfect for work.
