2013 seems to be the year I really got into using self tanners. I think self tanning is a quick and easy, fuss free way to gorgeous colour. I'm naturally olive skin toned, as I'm Cypriot, but in the summer when all you lovelies spend time sunbathing and end up with a gorgeous golden colour, I feel pale. I'm not really a big tanning person, I don't have the patience for sitting out in the sun, boiling away under the heat I usually can't cope with. I'm more of a sit in the shade with a book kind of girl than full on sunbathing. Self tanners give me the gorgeous colour I get naturally on holidays, without the worry of sun damage, or having to endure the boredom! My favourite fuss-free self tanner of the year, has to be the Clarins Delicious Self Tanning Cream* (Clarins*, 125ml, £22) - and this isn't a product I'll be putting away during the colder months, this is an all round must for me now!
The Clarins Delicious Self Tanning Cream is different from any other self tanner I have tried. With a cream consistency, this almost looks like caramel mousse - yum! The formula is enriched with aloe vera, smells like cocoa and contains cocoa butter which helps prevent any unwanted premature ageing. To use, I apply this after a strict 'pre-self tanning' routine. A long hot soak in the bath, exfoliating everywhere, making sure to shave everywhere too, before slathering on lots of body oil followed by a luxuriously thick body butter; all of this done the night before self-tanning ensures my tan goes on nicer, avoids any nasty streaks and also prolongs my tan. It's super important to make sure our dry areas, such as knees, elbows and feet, are super soft and hydrated before applying self tanners otherwise you could be left with tell tale signs and streaks! Once my pre-tanning routine is done, I apply this as I would a body cream or lotion, making sure to get every wear but just using my hands opposed to a tanning mitt like I would a tanning lotion or spray - just be sure to wash your hands straight after. I find using my hands to massage the cream in makes for a better even, all round golden glow - I tried with a tanning mitt and found the consistency just didn't make a good fit.
Clarins claim a natural looking tan with a golden glow will be noticeable within a few hours - and it is, but I notice the beauty of this self tanning cream the most, the day after first application. After the first application, I'll reapply again the next day or two, but then I'm all set with a gorgeous natural looking colour that doesn't fade completely until a few days later. I love how different this is to other self tanners I have tried, I love how it smells completely edible whilst feeling lovely to apply all at the same time. It's definitely a more luxurious tanning product, but it's the tanning product which for me, produces the most natural colour - when I use lotions or sprays, I can still tell it's a 'fake' tan. I'm definitely going to keep using this bad boy throughout the colder months, to keep my pasty legs a lovely golden brown!
