July Birchbox - The Jet Set Box

A picture of the July Birchbox

Have you ever opened a beauty box and literally screamed? Well that's what I did yesterday when I opened the July Birchbox*. The July Birchbox comes presented in a gorgeous bright, neon orange ribbon. The theme for the box, Jet Set, perfectly describes the contents. Nicely filled with products which come from all over the World; America, Australia and some local brands from the UK to name a few. The products in this month's Birchbox are the perfect travel friendly products for taking on your travels. Add to that the Birchbox magazine - a feature I wish all beauty boxes included - and you're pretty set to go! Even before Birchbox took over this particular box, which was originally Joliebox, I've always been a fan of the packaging for this beauty box. It's not messy, instead clean, presented beautifully and there is no unnecessary shredded paper or straw to worry about. Once you pluck up the courage to undo the pretty and perfectly bowed neon orange ribbon and lift the lid, you're greeted by a Birchbox bag and magazine. I actually love these kind of bags and have a few from old Jolieboxes that I kept to use for travel, as they're great for popping in a few items and tying up.

The Birchbox magazine, I think, is something which makes Birchbox stand out from the other UK boxes out there. The magazine is a nice little addition and makes you feel a little bit more like you're getting your pennies worth. This month the magazine was as much of a fab read as I had hoped, with a perfectly themed cover of multi-coloured worn down suitcases. Off on your travels anyone? So some of you might be wondering, why exactly does a magazine set Birchbox apart? It's what features in the magazine I love. There's product reviews and news, you can find out all about the products and brands in your box, tips and tricks, beauty news and even a few non-beauty, life-related pieces as well as interviews with beauty professionals and even sometimes, a familiar favourite blogging face will appear  Its a pretty varied read - I just wish it was longer!

OK, so what's in the July Birchbox, that made me so excited? Erm... theBalm!! When have you ever found theBalm in a beauty box?! If you've been reading my blog for a while you will know I am a big, big, big fan of theBalm, and they are a brand which frequently features here on the blog. From their powder highlighters which are firm favourites; Mary-Lou Manizer and Betty-Lou Manizer, to their amazingly pigmented and hard to beat eyeshadows and palettes; Meet Matt(e) Nude and Balm Jovi Rockstar Palette. theBalm is a brand with amazing quality products, that never let down on pigmentation and they last, last, last! Unfortunately, theBalm isn't readily available in the UK - which is why I screamed when I opened the July Birchbox. I have had my eye on the Instain Long Wearing Staining Powder Blushes from theBalm ever since their release in America a few months back, and they're yet to hit the UK. I received a 0.5g Instain Long Wearing Staining Powder Blush in Swiss Dot. It's such a cute sample size! I've already used this once - yesterday - and I love it. It might not be the colour from the range which has caught my eye the most but it was lovely for a flush of colour to the apples of my cheeks yesterday and I am so happy to finally have my hands on one! theBalm is available in & Other Stories, on Beauty Chamber and Feel Unique. (Full size, £21.50)

The next thing in the box which caught my eye was a shot (packet) of Chai Seeds from The Chai Co. Chai seeds have actually been on my radar for a few months now and I've been massively curious about them; has anyone else noticed all the health foodies over on Instagram seem to be using them? (or should I say, covering their food in them) So I'm glad to to see them in the box and I'm excited to give these a go; who knows, I might end up loving them! These were actually the 'Lifestyle Extra' in this month's Birchbox; another added extra I like about this beauty box. Back to beauty products and I was happy to see a Weleda Skin Food sample. Weleda is a very local brand whose products I've featured here on the blog quite a few times. It's safe to say I am a fan and I am always happy to see their products in beauty boxes, particularly Skin Food which is a bit of a skin rescuing product! I received a 10ml sample size and Skin Food usually retails at £8.95 per 75ml. You can find Weleda on the Weleda website and Feel Unique. Skin Food is a deeply moisturising product which works to hydrate and soften the skin. It's perfect particularly for those with dry and very dry skin. Another skincare product in the box was the Blanc Cachemire Creme De Jour Protectrice. This is a brand and product I have never heard of before but the handy Birchbox menu telling me everything which I can find in my box assures me it is a light-weight moisturising cream adored by both the UK and Paris Birchbox teams. I'm always happy with skincare samples, so I am excited to give this a go. Although as Skin Food is also a moisturiser, it would have been nice to see a different kind of skincare product in the box; perhaps an eye cream or a serum or oil skincare product. But I will be sure to use this sample up regardless, I really do love discovering new brands and products where skincare is concerned.

In the box we also have a full size Laura Geller Beauty Inkwell Gel Eyeliner. Now, I've never tried any products from Laura Geller Beauty, but it is a brand I have heard of before as the Australian beauty gurus I watch on YouTube love Laura Geller and they frequently feature in their videos. And a full sized makeup product? Who am I to complain! Described as a long-lasting eyeliner with built-in brush, the Inkwell Gel Eyeliner is perfect for travel. Can be used for bold liner or smudged out for a smokey eye look. I also love that this isn't the usual expected black eyeliner, instead it's a lovely deep aubergine purple shade. This is perfect for me right now as I am loving different coloured eyeliners for the warmer days, a nice change from my usual black. This is a full size product and retails for £24.50. You can find Laura Geller Beauty on QVC and Cult Beauty. The final product in the box was a Beauty Protector Protect and Detangle. A sample size and Birchbox exclusive product, the Protect and Detangle is formulated to keep hair silky, glossy and protected. I'm always one to love a new hair care product, so I'm looking forward to giving this a go.

I love the contents of the July Birchbox, there's a nice mix of makeup, skincare, hair care and even health foods. I love the variety of products that Birchbox always seem to include in their boxes, with products from all over the World, but sometimes that can mean we are trying products we could love but then find hard to get hold of. Although keep an eye on Beauty Chamber, as I know they are due to get the theBalm Instain blushes very soon! Something else I really liked about this month's box is the added extra of some lovely designed postcards, featuring all the places in the World that these products originate from. Now that is a nice touch Birchbox! I am excited to use these when writing to pen pals. You can subscribe to Birchbox on a monthly basis or take out a subscription of three months, six months or a year. A monthly subscription costs £10 per box plus £2.95 post and packaging - standard for most UK beauty boxes. You can find out more and subscribe on the Birchbox website

    1. I think so too! Personally not a fan of Glossybox, so good to see Birchbox impresses beauty adorers and upping their game :) xo

  3. Its a good box but I'll be disappointed if I get this. I've been subscribed to birchbox since they came in January and three of the products are from previous birch boxes one being in the box only last month. The skin food I loved it was from mays box and I still have the sample and bought a bigger tube using points from birchbox. And also the gel eyeliner. X

    1. It's a shame there are repeat products - For me this is the first Birchbox I've reviewed and I'm really happy and impressed with the contents, although as a said a variety of skincare products opposed to two moisturisers would have been fab! xo

    1. It's such a lovely colour as well, I don't own any gel liners of the same shade so it's great for me. So used to seeing either really hard to use shades or simple black in beauty boxes. Refreshing to see an alternative, wearable colour :) xo

    1. Ah I didn't realise it wasn't available in Canada. You'd think as an American company they would branch out around them first, rather than over the pond! I hope you get Birchbox soon :) xo
