Glossybox 1st Birthday Anniversary Box

As many people now know, this month is the one year birthday anniversary of Glossybox! This month's box was themed around that, and it is now the second Glossybox I have received! So here's what I got!

Noble Isle Summer Rising Bath & Shower Gel
"An immaculate fragrance evoking the beginnings of summer. Noble Isle is a new British bath and body brand inspired by the natural cultural riches of the British Isles."
I have a ton of shower gels waiting to be used, so this wasn't something I 'needed' to try. So at first I was a bit underwhelmed. Then I smelt it! The scent is quite unusual for a shower gel and I've seen a lot of people say they dislike the scent. But I adore it. It's a very strong, masculine scent which almost smells of aftershave. But striving through those scents to make it that touch feminine, is a burst of zesty scents. I can't wait to use this as I just love the scent! I received a 75ml sample!
Full Size: 250ml £20

Lolita Lempicka L'Eau en Blanc & Eau de Parfum
"Discover Lolita Lempicka's feminine World where Parisian chic meets fantasy fairy tale to create the perfect fragrance."
I was quite happy to receive two perfume samples because I love perfume samples that fit nicely into my handbag for on the go! They are easy to use samples, too, with a spray pump opposed to those awful samples you get where you have to open the top of a glass vial! They both smell absolutely divine! L'Eau en Blanc has a very mature but soft scent to it and it reminds me a little of the scent of talcum powder! The Eau de Parfum scent is more sweet and subtle! Both perfumes came in 0.8ml sample sizes!
Full Size: 100ml £65

Neal's Yard Remedies Rehydrating Rose Daily Moisture
"Hydrating rose extract and damask rose oil soften, smooth and help restore skin's natural radiance."
I received a rose moisturiser with my May Joliebox (review here) so I wasn't over the moon to receive another. But what I was really happy about is that it is from Neal's Yard! I came across Neal's Yard just a week ago through the Glossybox Facebook page and loved the website and reading all about the brand. So I am so happy to be trying out one of their products! Hopefully it won't be bad for my skin and make my oily skin worse! I received a full sized version of this!
Full Size: 45ml £12

Collection (2000) Lasting Colour Gel Eyeliner
"Creating longer for perfect liner with lasting lustre is easier than ever to achieve with Collection Lasting Colour Gel Eyeliners."
I. Love. Gel. Eyeliners. Ever since trying Elf's studio gel liner, I have just been in love and I haven't used a liquid liner since! I just find them so easy to use! So I was happy to receive this and although at first I wished it had been a darker or brighter shade, once swatching it I am now really happy with the shade I got, which is gold. It goes on easily, it is really pigmented with a touch of glitter for sparkle and it has the best lasting power, ever! Far more than I would expect from Collection! I received a full sized product of this!
Full Size: 5ml £4.99

Eldora False Eyelashes
"Eldora is about beautiful, quality and value-priced lashes for any occasion."
This is the second beauty subscription box that I have received false eyelashes in, so I wasn't wowed. I haven't even used the ones I got with my She Said Beauty box yet (review here) as I haven't had the occasion to! So these shall just be joining the others in my cupboard....
Full Size: From £3.90

Overall, I liked this month's box. If I am honest, what with it being the one year birthday anniversary and a themed box, I really was hoping for more. I felt very underwhelmed with this box, expecting it to be some massive, magnificent box full of full sized items from high end brands. Obviously, that is not the point of a beauty box subscription. The point is to try out products in sample size, and occasionally you will receive full sized items too. The products are all something I am going to enjoy trying and I like every thing. So overall, no complaints from me! I also like the little Glossybox mirror which came with the box as well as the Glossybox balloon! Nice touch!

What did you get in your Glossybox? What did you like best?

Guest Post - The Beauty Habit

Hi everyone. My name is Lauren and I write a wee blog called the beauty habit (link: http://www.misslaurenalicephelan.com/) So, when the gorgeous Sophia kindly asked me to write a little guest post it took me all of about 10 minutes to decide what I wanted to write about.  Like most people I tend to go through phases with products where I’ll become oddly obsessed with one type of thing, be it blush or foundation. Well, for a long time now I've had a thing for lipsticks. I have a bit of a collection myself which encompasses everything from pinks, peaches, reds and everything in between. In the UK right now the weather seems to have taken a hint and warmed up a little. Makeup wise this means I ditch the eye shadows and favour gorgeous base products for my face and super pretty lipsticks.

So here are my top lip picks for Summer 2012;

First up is a new-ish purchase for me. It’s Laura Mercier’s Sheer Lip Colour in Kissed Lips.  Now don’t let the name fool you. This is actually a super buildable product that can be worn lightly or layered up to achieve something more intense.  It’s a super creamy coral-pink.  It delivers a hint of gloss but in a very natural way. The thing I love about this lipstick is the formulation. First of all it’s super hydrating, smells delicious and lasts a long time. Secondly is this whole “Sheer” thing. What’s so unusual about it is the way it applies serious colour to your lips whilst allowing you to see freckles and pigmentation through it.  So classy and very versatile. They’re priced at £16.50 which I think is fairly reasonable. I’m a Chanel lipstick collector and I think the formulation of this lipstick could easily carry a price tag as hefty as my favourite Chanel lipsticks.

Next is actually a lip pencil from Makeup Store. I was on the hunt for a coral lip pencil forever.  I’m a massive coral fan and the fact I didn’t have one in my collection was a bit of a shocker.  So when I finally hunted this down I was super pleased to find out I could wear it all over the lip.  It’s buttery soft and extremely pigmented, the formulation is similar to the Topshop stick Lipsticks in that it’s very matte but nowhere near as drying. When worn built up it’s a very yellow based coral, but I found that it was very warm toned which makes it a lot more forgiving than a lipstick like Viva Glam Nicki Minaj from Mac. I’ve been wearing it lightly dragged over the lips then blotted out in the day time and with a slick of Barry M’s coral lipgloss at night time. These are a little more difficult to get hold of in the UK. I picked mine up from their store in Westfield (there is also one on Carnaby Street) and I think I paid roughly £12 for it.

And last but not least is a favourite budget lipstick of mine. I’ve owned it forever and it comes out every summer. It’s from 17 and it’s the Lasting Fix lipstick in the shade Hot Chilli. This is one of the very few red lipsticks I’ll wear in the summer I think because it’s an orangey/yellow toned red it looks amazing with a tan. There is also an almost imperceptible golden sheen through it which makes the colour really “pop” under sunlight. The formulation is rich, creamy and incredibly long lasting. I’d also point out that it is an absolute dupe for Chanel  Rouge Allure Passion. You can pick this up from most Boots stores nationwide for £4.29. (P.S. They have now revamped the packaging so it looks a little different!)

Well that’s all from me.  If any of you have a summer lipstick recommendation for me then please leave a comment below or tweet me @lauren_alice I’m always on the hunt for something new!!

Thanks so much again to Sophia for letting me post.  Mwah!

Starter for Ten - Book review.

The is David Nicholls first published work, although not the first I have read. I have now read all of David Nicholls books and I am hoping a fourth is soon to come out, as I just love them!

David Nicholls manages to write about normal every day life, in a normal every day manner. There's no need for exaggeration in his stories. Every thing blends in and fits together perfectly.

"1985. First-year student and Kate Bush fan Brian falls for beautiful University Challenge Queen Alice Harbinson in a brilliant comedy of love, class, growing up and the all-important difference between knowledge and wisdom."

I found this story to be really lovely, and one I could relate to. You follow Brian through his first year of University, understanding his expectations and living the reality of what Uni is really like. And this is why I felt I could relate to it. The story of Brian's first year of University isn't far off of the one I had and his expectations mirrored mine. It also made me look back on my first year with fond memories and appreciate the experience I am getting by being at University.

The love side of this book is hopeful, hopeless, fun, flirty and devastating all at once. Brian wants Alice, but you start to want Brian to notice Rebecca instead. You can see Rebecca is better for Brian, and you start to resent Alice's character. But it all works out in the end, even if University life doesn't....

A great read for anyone wishing to explore male authors with an ease for writing without the need for theatrics.

The May Joliebox!

I have been trying out different subscription beauty boxes, in the hope that soon I will settle on the perfect one for me! So far I have tried Glossybox (see the review here) which I am so far keeping on with a monthly subscription, and She Said Beauty (see the review here) which I decided to cancel after my first box as although I liked the products, I preferred Glossybox and can't afford several boxes each month! So when I cancelled my She Said Beauty subscription, I decided to try out Joliebox. This month's May edition is my very first!

My first impressions of Joliebox is that the box itself is a lot smaller than either of the previous beauty boxes I had received. I was really drawn in by the bag which comes with Joliebox when ordering my box, but I was a little disappointed that it feels so cheap and as if it could just fall apart, and the stitching is very loose, too. So I was a bit off put with that. Other than that I adore that Joliebox comes with a proper little magazine. Inside are products of the month, interviews, information on craze products, make up tips and lessons as well as offers and much more! I really loved reading it and this little magazine really has the upper hand on other beauty box subscriptions! And as well as this, inside the box was a little card insert describing this month's box and it's products! The only downside is that unlike with Glossybox and She Said Beauty, it doesn't specify the prices of each product! Each product in this month's box is a plant-based product!

So here's what I got in my Joliebox!

Essential Care Organic Rose Moisturiser
"A light-textured moisturiser with the re-hydrating benefits of organic rose, for all skin types."
I've tested this out on the back of my hand and it feels really nice as well as soaking into the skin easily. It has a gorgeous scent of rose and I'm excited to try it out, although I'm not 100% sure how it will be with my oily skin! I received a 15ml sample size of this product.

Talika Eye Therapy Patch
"This reusable patch for under eye instantly smooth's the area using extracts of safflower, avocado and rosehip."
I received one sample sachet of this which apparently can be used three times. Quite looking forward to trying this out! I was hoping I would receive the eye lash growth product that I saw in other people's Joliebox but this is still nice, although I'm not sure it's something I would ever think of buying if I hadn't received a sample.

RMK Make Up Base
"This make up base primes the surface of the skin, adds moisture with shea butter and provides the perfect fit for foundation."
Unfortunately, with my oily skin, this product doesn't sound like it will be any good for me at all. But I am willing to give it a go! My sample is 15ml.

China Glaze Professional Nail Lacquer
"Give your nails a burst of flower power colour with this long-lasting, chip resistant and nail-hardening polish."
I've never tried china glaze before so I was really happy to receive this full sized polish! I saw a lot of people receive bright, vivid colours, and my nail polish collection is full of those, so I was really chuffed that instead I received a sheer purple glitter polish! The shade I received was marry a millionaire which made me chuckle, and I think it'll be the perfect finish to many of my polishes, as well as on it's own. So I can't wait to get using this!

I also received a Joliebox make up brush, which I plan to use for eye shadow, which I thought was a really nice addition considering there was only four samples in the box, and only one was full sized. I am going to keep my subscription going for another month as June is Joliebox birthday so I am hoping for big things!

What did you get in your Joliebox? Did you like everything?

Joliebox is £10 a month plus £2.95 p&p. You can sign up here

MAC breaks my heart.

A bit of a different post today, but I wanted to talk to you all about my experiences with MAC shop assistants.

MAC is a brand that I always lusted after, but never thought I would see myself indulging in because as I am sure we can all agree, it is a pricey brand. But last summer I succumbed and bought my first MAC product, the matchmaster foundation. Since then I have added eye liners, mascaras, lipglasses, brushes, primers and an array of MAC lipsticks. For me, the best thing about MAC is their lipstick.

So why is it, that a brand I enjoy using, a brand I treat myself to, leaves me feeling as if I shouldn't be buying from them?

I think it mostly boils down to the service I have received when buying from MAC, a service I would class as some of the most rude, arrogant and down right atrocious service I have ever received from any company, anywhere.

All of my MAC purchases bar two, have been from the Nottingham branch. My other purchases, both lipstick, have been fine. One was from online when the new Hey Sailor! collection came out, and the other at the MAC counter in Debenhams in Highcross, Leicester. The service I received there was actually lovely, full of advice and clarity. I left feeling like I had bought something really special, and would definitely part with my pennies there again.

But the Nottingham branch? Every time I go in there, I have to persuade myself to go in. That it is after all the only place in Nottingham to buy MAC and if I want the product on my mind at that point, that I have to brave it. But after buying another lipstick from there on Friday I have come to the decision that I will never be shopping in that MAC again. So let me explain why.

  • Every time I go in there, it is insanely busy. They just seem so unorganised, as if they are lacking in trained staff, and they don't seem to take any notice of customers who have been waiting longest, instead, with no exaggeration, going towards customers who look the part of a MAC customer, before others. Let me give you an example. On Friday when I went in to purchase a new lipstick there were around 4 other customers in the shop. I was told I would be seen to as soon as possible. Cue three school kids, two adults together and another adult coming in to the store. All of which were helped and served before my friend and I.
  • The Nottingham staff are also incredibly rude. They never smile (and I am a firm believer that a smile really does make all the difference), they talk in a very 'I'm holier than thou' manner and they make degrading comments about your make up if you are not wearing everything MAC or if your make up isn't perfect. An example. When I went to buy my very first MAC lipstick it was at the end of a very long shopping day. I had been reapplying my lipstick throughout the day but by 5pm it was almost all gone. When inquiring over a red lipstick I was told, "Yeah your lipstick looks a bit rubbish really, your lips aren't very good are they, very feathery", which not only embarrassed me and knocked my confidence, but I was appalled as I have spent many years working in customer facing roles and would never dream of speaking to a customer like that.
  • There just seems to be a massive lack of passion from the staff. As if all they care about is getting you in and out and making money. There's no helping you, no advising, no suggestions of specific shades or products. It's forceful service, with a botox face and over done make up. It makes me feel like buying from there is a chore, not a pleasure.
It's just not the kind of service I want from a brand that I spend a lot of money on. It has gotten to the point where I know I will never be buying from that branch again, and I am even considering writing to MAC to air my issues with them.

What do you think of the service you receive from MAC? What is your favourite and least favourite MAC branch?

The perfect end to the Uni year

At last, I have finally finished my exams, which also means I have finished my second year of University ~breathes a sigh of relief~ I study Psychology BSc at a North London University. The only thing which makes my University experience a little different is that I don't live in London. I did during my first year and just found I was really unhappy and it didn't agree with me. So for the entirety of my second year I have been commuting from home, in Nottingham. It's been tiring at times, but mostly very manageable. And I'm proud of myself for doing it because at the beginning of the year so many of my lecturers said I wouldn't be able to do it. And I did. So, so long as I don't have to do any resits in July (which I realise is a possibility, I find out exam results in June) then I have now finished my second year! Hurrah!!

To celebrate finishing my second year, and to celebrate the birthday of my bestie which was on Wednesday, we spent yesterday in Nottingham doing a little shopping spree. Hayley had some vouchers she wanted to spend, we wanted to check out the Clinque mascara swap offer and there were a few things I wanted, but mainly, it was going to be treating myself. This bus, which is a London bus, was outside the Town Hall. Someone had hired it for their wedding. Which I thought was really cool and different! We also stopped off at Pret a Manger for a little drink and cake break.

We got a lot done, indulging in 3 for 2 offers in both Boots and Superdrug. I also lost my Nars virginity, indulged in another new MAC lipstick and treated myself to a new perfume! I will be sharing all in a haul post which you can expect over the next few days! Unfortunately, when we got to the Clinque stand in Debenhams they had discontinued their mascara swap offer because they had run out. We were both really gutted, and personally I felt that if you were running an offer and it had not yet reached the end date, you should ensure you have enough stock to last you through. I guess I never will get to try a Clinque mascara. But, exams have been really stressful and it was just a really lovely way to unwind and relax without worrying about this revision, or that exam.

After our lovely and long day of shopping til we were ready to drop, Hayley dropped me off at my boyfriend's. Then we headed over to my brother's with my dad, to see my nephew Oscar, and to have a fish and chip shop dinner! I hadn't seen Oscar since his birthday three weeks ago so it was so lovely to see him. As usual he really took to my boyfriend and I spent most of the time tickling him. He's picked up a bad habit though, can you tell what it is?

I am so glad that Uni is over for another year. I have a few things to look forward to over the summer, and a mountain of books to read til my heart's content. I hope everyone else who has been doing their exams has done well, good luck with remaining exams and your results, and I hope you all have a wonderful summer!

Sleek lipsticks!

I think it's safe to say two of the most popular, cheaper drugstore brands every one loves right now are Sleek and MUA. And I have a fair few products from both! One thing I love from Sleek in particular, is the lipsticks!

I find the lipsticks are really well pigmented, they have lasting power and they aren't drying, in fact they leave my lips feeling soft and moisturised! I also really like the design of the packaging for Sleek lipsticks. It's a little different, with a slightly more oval shape to the casing, which I think is a really nice subtle difference from the standard lipstick casing shape, just enough to set it apart from other brands!

L-R; Mulberry, Coral Reef & Peaches and Cream.

Do you have any Sleek lipsticks? What shade is your favourite? I really want to see what Papaya Punch and Heartbreaker are like, and maybe add them to my collection!

Sleek True Colour Lipsticks - £4

Stargazer eye dust!

I recently did a post on some Stargazer cosmetics (read here) and as they have been one of my favourite make up companies for a fair few years now, I thought I would share with you all my love for the eye dusts!

L-R; 18, 20, 2, 27 & 26

Stargazer eye dusts are really highly pigmented and can be used in two ways, as they are or with a little bit of water on your brush/applicator to make the colour stand out even more! They are really long lasting, come in a ridiculous array of shades and are really easy to use!

The packaging on Stargazer cosmetics can be a little less than you'd hope for, it's all plastic. But the products themselves are fantastic. I've used these to create dramatic eye looks, or more subtle, delicate looks. They are so versatile!

Stargazer cosmetics are available in some alternative shops and all of their products are available on the online website which you can find here.

Stargazer Eye Dust - £3

InStyle Nails Inc. offer and NOTW!

Every one knows by now that this month's issue of InStyle magazine has a Nails Inc. offer! With each magazine you can collect three Nails Inc. nail polishes, specially formulated for InStyle magazine and exclusive to the magazine! You get one colour with each magazine, so obviously I had to buy three magazines and make sure I got the whole set! From L-R the shades are Bluebell, Peach Sorbet and Power Pink!

For this weeks 'nails of the week' I have picked Bluebell and Power Pink to do a mix! I love the overall look and think the shades go perfectly together!

Have you picked up any of these with InStyle magazine? Have you collected all three like me?

Kim Kardashian, Eau De Parfume, review!

If you read my post on my She Said Beauty May box (post here) you would know that I received a roll on sample of Kim Kardashian's perfume!

"A beautiful blend of feminine and sensual notes, the debut fragrance captures the many sides of Kim's personality and glamorous style."
Full Size: £22.95 - £39.95 30ml, 50ml, 100ml

I've been using this for just over a week now, having it in my hand bag for when I am on the go and I wanted to review it because surprisingly, I am absolutely loving it! I am not a massive fan of celebrity perfumes because as I am sure many will agree, it seems to be just another way for them to make money. But this perfume is actually divine! It smells really different to anything I have smelt before, with a slight coconut undertone to it and I genuinely think I may be tempted to buy the full size when this runs out!

Do you have any celebrity perfumes? Have you smelt this perfume? What is your favourite perfume?

An Italian favourite.

As some of you may have read, I have a blog over on Tumblr which is an advertising forum for people to make pen-pals with people all over the World. You can read about it here

One of my pen-pals was lovely enough to send me two body lotion sample sachets along with her last letter and I wanted to share my thoughts on them with you! From the brand L'erbolario, she sent me a pear scented sachet and a rose scented sachet. I have now used this and I am in love! I wish they were easily accessible over in the UK but from my google searches, unfortunately they aren't!

They both went on super smoothly and the lotions have such a light weight texture, not feeling greasy or sticky but with a slightly silky powdery feel to them!

If anyone knows where to get hold of this brand in the UK please do let me know because I would love to try out more of this brand! :)

Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation, review!

Everyone has been raving about this foundation so I wanted to give it a go as I don't have a lot of foundations but I find I need to change my foundation regularly according to my skin on the day! So I picked up this new raved about Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation to see if it was really as good as every one claims!

"Use Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation to lift skin from fatigue, with a healthy radiant glow."

I've been using this for around two weeks now and I can honestly say, I love it. It has it's pros and cons though!

Pros
The packaging is really eye catching and stands out with the vivid orange cap
I find with a lot of foundations one pump can be too little, and two pumps can be too much. Whereas one pump of this is just right!
It goes on really easily
It gives me a slight dewy effect and my skin looks more awake and revived
It stays put for most of the day!
It feels nice on my skin and is really lightweight

Cons
It's a very light weight foundation and doesn't provide a full coverage, so it has to be built up to provide a full coverage, if that's what you're looking for
It's not amazing with my oily skin

Overall I love this foundation and want to get the accompanying concealer to keep in my handbag for when out! I would recommend it to any one and yet again I am very pleased with another lovely Rimmel product!

Philip B Drop Dead Straightening Balm, review!

When I got this in my April Glossybox (read review of the box here) I was so excited! I don't use many styling products because my hair is generally quite oily, so I was excited to try this one out!

Philip B Drop Dead Straightening Balm
"Philip B Drop Dead straightening balm is a non-greasy, silicone-free water-soluble styling aid that gives curly or wavy hair a straight, tangle-free, and sleek finish."
Yet again, a product I was excited about! I received a 15ml sample of this product. I'm excited about this because my hair is naturally curvy/wavy and I straighten it every day but I never use any straightening products because my hair is naturally very oily and I find adding products to my hair spends up the process of making me look gross! So I'm excited by the description of this and will be trying it out this afternoon!
Full size: 178ml £17

I have to admit, the product does do what it says. My hair dries almost perfectly straight and it feels lovely. But...

After using this product, each time I have noticed my scalp feels irritated and itchy. It's definitely the product as it only happens when I have used this! So this isn't one for me and I am too scared to finish off the tube in fear of what it will do to my scalp!

Did you receive this in your glossy box? What did you think to it?
