Vita Liberata pHenomenal Long Lasting Tan Mousse

A picture of Vita Liberata pHenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Long Lasting Tan Mousse

We are now in to the 7th and penultimate week of the Tans for Women of Colour project and this week I, along with the other lovely ladies on the project, will be sharing our thoughts with you on the Vita Liberata pHenomenal Long Lasting Tan Mousse. I have been using the medium moose and some of the other girls are the project have been using the dark. So this is a great week to see how different shades of tanning products work on different people with different skin tones. Before I get in to my review, I had a thought the other night which I thought might be quite helpful for those who tan, are curious about tanning and also for those who have been reading and enjoying the posts for this project.

Has their been an effect on my skin from using so many tanning products?

It made me think because body care is a big must for me as much as skincare or having beautiful makeup and the right hair care products to look after my hair. I used to have the idea in my head that people who tan a lot and use tanning products on a daily or weekly basis must have pretty dry and clogged skin. After all, you are putting a product on to your skin which sticks around and alters the colour and condition of your skin. So I always just thought that that must mean you are left with bad skin. But this is actually the opposite of the truth! I haven't seen any negative effects or changes in my skin from using tanning products. My body care routine is the same, I exfoliate regularly and moisturise twice a day. And I think that is the key to keeping your skin in tip-top condition when using tanning products!

Before applying Vita Liberata pHenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Long Lasting Tan Mousse

Vita Liberata advertise themselves as the World's first 2-3 week tan. They promise a long lasting colour and a perfect fade every time. They use a special combination of nourishing extracts and the unique pHenO2 technology which has reinvented self tan. pHenomenal contains all the unique selling points of their other tanning products, but this one lasts up to four times longer. It's streak and scent free, 100% free from parabens, perfume and alcohol and is easy to apply. It has a unique Pentavitin moisturise lock system and contains 70% organic extracts that are kind to skin and produces a natural fade, eventually! It suggests for best application you apply once, allow to settle for between 3 and 24 hours, then reapply. So is it as good and as easy as they claim?

Quite frankly, no. This, out of all of the brands and products we have tried during this project, has been my least favourite. I actually really dislike this product, and it's a shame as I had such high expectations of a brand which such huge claims and, quite a price tag to match. So, I hear you ask. Why? What is so wrong with this product that it has made me dislike it so much? OK, are you ready for it? Here goes.

After applying Vita Liberata pHenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Long Lasting Tan Mousse
(This was after two days when it had calmed down a bit - Trust me, the other photos were a lot worse)

When I first applied this mousse with a tanning mitt, it applied evenly and streak free, as promised. And I didn't notice a scent, as promised. But that is where the positivity with this product came to an abrupt halt. After 10 minutes I noticed the colour was really starting to develop. This particular tanning product sunk in quicker than most on the project and I didn't feel sticky anywhere. So imagine my surprise when seven hours later I washed my hair over the bath and suddenly noticed orange water in the bath. I looked at my arm, which had had a mere streak of water catch it, and there was a distinct white streak where the tanning product had once been, and was now in my bath. And it just kept on dripping. I had two options. I left it and reapplied as advised the next day, or I reapplied there and then. I decided to wait.

The next morning I woke up. The bed sheets were tan free. But me? I was orange. And I mean, bright orange. As soon as my partner looked at me, he laughed and asked me, "Where's Willy Wonka, won't he be expecting you in the chocolate factory?", obviously comparing me to an Oompa Lumpa. I was mortified when I looked at myself in the mirror. There was no denying it, I was orange. And any area of my body where I have higher pigmentation and darker skin, was the most vivid dirty orange shade. I think Laalaa explained the colour of this tan perfectly for me - Like a dirt red road. I felt disgusting. I looked horrendous. I instantly jumped in the shower, whacking body scrub on the worst areas and in the process, the whole bath turned orange with the vivid orange water coming off of my body. This was I would like to add, 24 hours after first application. When I got out of the shower the last thing I wanted to do was reapply, but I needed to follow the directions to a T for the benefit of this project. So I reapplied. And I just looked worse.

It took four days and a shower each day, for this tan to settle down. It wasn't until the fourth shower that the water stopped running orange. And the worst thing of all? This product, which is quite pricey by the way at £37.50 for a 125ml bottle didn't even last 2-3 weeks as promised on the packaging and bottle when you apply as and when it says. In fact, this had but completely faded on me after just one week. One week! As far as I am concerned, this product is a lot to shell out a hella'lotta'pennies for a tan which doesn't last, turns you orange, is terrible with any darker pigmentation areas and terrifies you every time you have a shower, leaving you thinking you are bleeding orange mess.

Gosh, this isn't a positive review, is it? But honestly? This product made me so down. It was a very stressful and upsetting week for me, terrified the orange look would not fade, tired of comments about working for Willy Wonka and made me feel so, so self conscious and ugly. There is no positive spin on this product. There is no way to make it sound better than it was. And I will always be honest on my blog. I wouldn't repurchase this, nor would I ever recommend it. This did nothing but let me down and ruin a whole week for me.

  1. OMG! I feel so sorry for you. I remember when I tried a fake tan from avon ages ago and I turned bright orange. It was the worst day/week of my life! I am guessing that this tan is for all the fake tan obsessed girls who don't mind the Oompa Loompa look... the price is scary!

  2. You had an awful experience with this and I remember seeing your tweets about it and it making me scared to even try it!

I must say, I dont like the colour of this much, its very artificial and made me look a little orange too. I am not keen but it lasted about 10 days on me which is not bad, that is with 2 layers applied.

I do think this is quite expensive and I will not be purchasing or recommending to be honest!

    Thanks
    Grace x

  4. OMG! This sounds awful! My experience was the opposite in that I didn't even develop any colour whatsoever - I agree, this brand is severely over-hyped and I think my least favourite out of all the tans. :(

  5. It is quite expensive, I think the justify the price by the claims it makes. Besides making me quite red in some places, I liked the colour it gave me once it started to sink in and fade, I only put the one layer on but I doubt I would purchase it but it's handy to have around! xo
