Caudalie Beauty Elixir, worth the hype?

A picture of the Caudalie Beauty Elixir
This has to make it into the top 10 raved about beauty products in 2012. Everyone has been talking about it, reviewing it, raving about it, obsessing over it. So what exactly is this miracle product that everyone seems to be in love with?

"The Caudalie Beauty Elixir smooths features, tightens pores and gives the complexion a burst of radiance. It is an excellent base for make up, it awakens the skin in the morning and livens it before a night out. It is for all skin types which lack radiance, as it is an exceptional anti-dull complexion treatment (as well as a wonderful after-shave treatment for men!) To use this product it's easy; shake well, avoid contact with eyes, and spray onto the face before moisturiser at any time of day. It can also be applied between your foundation and powder to perfectly set make up, and many love to use this during the day for a refreshing, toning, setting mist. It's main ingredients are grape, orange blossom, rose, organic balm mint and rosemary."

So far, I have not seen one negative review of this product. But I'm sorry to say, you're about to get one from me! First things first, this has a very strong scent. It's just too much for me and I find it repulsive. I like all of the main ingredients separately, but these ingredients and scents combined, for me, create a horrible, turn-your-nose-up-nasty scent. But now onto my main reason for disliking this product. It broke me out. I hardly ever get spots, probably once a month if that. Since using this, I have had the worst break out. I wasn't entirely sure if it was this which broke me out, so I stropped using it for a week then used it again for one day. The day after, another break out. So I think it's pretty safe to say this does not do wonders for my skin, in fact it does the opposite.

I know there's tons and tons of people who like this, but I just really don't. There are some positives to it, and that is purely aesthetic. I love the bottle, a frosted glass bottle. It looks and feels expensive and luxurious. I really wanted to like this product but it just doesn't work with my skin. I won't be purchasing another!

  1. I'm also a bit underwhelmed by it. It hasn't made me break out but honestly, it hasn't really done anything at all! Just feels like I'm spraying water on my face that makes it a bit sticky - and I agree with you on the smell. Way too overpowering. X

  2. Ahh what a shame you didn't get on with it! I got sent one in a swap recently and I love it! I have really dry skin and find it really helps with it, and prevent my make-up from looking dull (and I know you don't!) so maybe that is why! :)

  3. All I've ever seen is everyone rave about this so it's really refreshing to see a review that is completely honest about not liking it! Thank you!

  4. I keep repurchasing this as I love the tingly feeling it leaves on my skin but for me it doesnt add radiance, tighten pores or anything else it claims to do.

  8. What a shame it broke you out! I seriously hate it when that happens! I wish there was some way we could test lol! If only that were possible! xx

  9. It breaks me out too - I really really wanted to like this and I just hated it in the end. It obviously works for me some but not for me. I am glad I bought the smaller bottle and didn't waste too much money on the larger one. Boo to this!

I dont know why I didnt review it actually, I should have, as a warning! Glad you have warned others of it!

    Thanks Sophia!

  10. Great, honest review. I love this stuff as I think it really does help my skin in the morning, if you are using it just as a refresh spray it is a waste of money but as skincare, for me it's worth it. You're review shows that everyones skin is different and no matter how much a product is raved about it may not work for you :)

  15. I was tempted to buy this awhile back after seeing it on loads of blogs. But I looked it up and found it contains alcohol so I've avoided it. If you've been using it daily then it could be that the alcohol is drying out your skin, which causes it to produce excess oil and gives you spots (I've been there!!). Great, honest review hun x

  17. Oh no - I have read some mixed reviews about this. I think it depends how your skin reacts to it but I have heard people mention the scent is overpowering. I'm still curious to try it though, but it is so pricey for a tiny bottle :S

  18. This worked really well for me. It helped clear up my blemishes and made my make-up look lovely. It has mixed reviews though, doesn't it? xx

  19. I haven't actually tried this yet but I have seen all the raves. The smell may be to much for me though, I'll have to sample someone else's first. Thanks for the honest review! xo

  21. @Been There, Done That, Got The Lipstick. Maybe find something that does that, but other things too? It's a lot to pay for a tingly feeling xo

  28. I've been trawling blogs for ages trying to find someone else who had a similar experience to me! This caused the most horrific break out for me, seriously not worth the hype, very disappointing product after all the glowing reviews.

  29. I LOVE THE SMELL! and would [if i could] use this mist 3 times a day!
BUT this mist makes me break out with a nasty red RASH. I loved the smell so much and (like a fool) I would wait a week and try it again and again, hoping it was something else causing the allergic reaction, but to no avail...... I ended up with tons of red bumps all over my face :-( :-( :-(
I still have no idea which of the ingredients causes the rash....?....? I would love suggestions about other mists that are better suited for 'sensitive' skin! :-)

  30. Hmm. I wonder if this is why I have a MASSIVE spot coming in on my chin. I used it this morning and I just looked in the mirror. My skin is bright red and I have a really gigantic spot coming in on my chin. I didn't do anything different, so I wonder if I am having the same reaction as you. I will have to try again in a week after my blemishes clear up.

  31. Thanks Sophia for your comment as I had a very bad facial and neck reaction with one of Caudaliés products or maybe both - the Anti-wrinkle defense serum or the Instant Detox Masque. I had never used Caudalie prior and never had an allergic reaction prior, but one of these products (after 2 days of use) - provoked terrible red pimples like roscea all over the face and neck and the next day a severely swollen face. I had to consult in emergency the hospital who gave me a perfusion of cortisone, followed by a prescription for another 3 days of cortisone. Since this experience, I have not touched the brand Caudalié (and will never again) and have no more problems. I have a normal skin and their packaging says for 'all skin types". I wish i had read more into these "natural products" before using them.
